These bullet points below was taken from this website of which if you think any parts of these points viable by your employer are being broke then the trades union can help you take action to get what you deserve.
Trade unions:
- negotiate agreements with employers on pay and conditions
- discuss major changes to the workplace such as large scale redundancy
- discuss their members; concerns with employers
- accompany their members in disciplinary and grievance meetings
- provide their members with legal and financial advice
- provide education facilities and certain consumer benefits such as discounted insurance

But this all applies if your company or your self apply to the trades union in the first place.
After looking for supporting bodies also for the makeup industry I found the Art Council England which The BFI- help with lottery funding to film production, education, distribution, audience development and market intelligence, core funded by the government.
This lead me to find a whole document page on bodies and organisations affecting the creative industry. This shows what the organisations are and what they do toward the film and TV industry.

I also further went into trade unions which dealt with media and entertainment, which lead me to find BETCU. This union helps with any hair and make-up artists who freelance of which they recommend you shouldn't accept any less than the amount founded by the union members. This also has a document which I have printed to have so that you know for each piece of work and even for a trainee what you should be getting paid for a certain amount of hours.
They say you should join there union because they will help with improvements to pay and the conditions of employment; work hours, sick pay, holiday entitlement and job security. Also they say they will help to provide proper protection of the workforce through the commitment of health and safety, equality and training define the company.
It also states "BECTU has long-standing recognition agreements with a huge number of employers operating in the media and entertainment industries. From large scale employers like the BBC, ITV, the National Theatre or Odeon, through to smaller operations such as the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal, or an animation workshop in Bristol, BECTU branches are working for their members."To any member thinking about joining a union this would maybe help in making a decision compared to others as they have agreements with most of the major make-up industry employers.
