The
most popular way to start off your career in the make-up industry would be to
publish your self on the internet with the social media sites available.
Most
of the major social media used to help a majority of self employed career would
be Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, Myspace, Instagram, Pinterest and You-tube.
From which these social network sites have blown up over the years being
more noticeable over the years to get new talent and more and more people use
these today.
These
social sites usually show your knowledge in your industry which you expand to
show your skills and techniques in this case towards Media Make-up. Which these
social networking sites allow everyone to help each other advertise their work
and develop on their skills. From these social networking sites they also allow
you to gain an advertisement on an international scale. All these social
networks are free and if your blog or you-tube page becomes famous/popular than
you will be gaining money for a certain amount of views.
Facebook
Starting
off with Facebook for this industry we would make this as a page for just to
view pictures of evidence of work, work hours if applicable and contact
details.
This shows how a make-up
artists advertises their self on Facebook with the page set up allowing you to
use images as a header banner for the page that a make-up artist can add images
of previous work on the top.
The profile picture is
usually of the most recent or favourite piece of work or the logo of the
persons small business created, or ether a profile picture of the make-up
artist them self, which isn't such a professional, portray of yourself.
From the page set up also
set by Facebook you can have recent images added along the left side and also
videos you've added, this shows and advertises the direct of the work you have
and shown the techniques and developed your skills over an amount of time.
Also from the set out of a
Facebook page you can have it where, you can only post stuff on your page and people
liking the page only see your information details. The information details only
shown are, the details of your working criteria and the details for contacting
you.
I do like the set out of a
Facebook page for advertisement but if it was me, I would change the profile
picture to something more advertising to customers maybe a logo or a offer
deal. Then you can get more people looking on your page. Further more If not as
a profile picture then the header and a better image instead of images as a
banner. The profile picture is quite a plan piece of work to try and advertise
your main work to customers.
Twitter
After focusing on Facebook I looked over the other social network of Twitter on someone advertising them self to show their work. So that overall to get an overview of which ones are being used best.
https://twitter.com/saharmua
This this just a make-up artist found on the internet when searching a random make-up artist. This shows an image of the make-up artist showing the skills via her own make-up and also all her main abilities in the about me. This twitter also allows images to be shown but its more out of the way and shoes what recent work she has done and recommended work from clients.
This Twitter is basic compared to the more detailed advertisement aspects covered on Facebook. The details have more contacting details but also has the idea of contacts of relatives and friends and people anywhere can see your work. But twitter allows people search for a topic of images under the use of "#" hash tag. This allows tweeters to view work if there looking especially for make-up work so more clients will see your work.
Myspace
My next social network is Myspace this was a big social networking site before Facebook and twitter came on the marketing side. And was known for the set out or layout for each profile as the html codes were very easy to get along with but also as every other social networking site it connects you to the word to view your page. This is the main and best quality to social networks.
I searched via Google again to try and find a range so that you can see the differences of the layouts and which network has a more broader understanding of the advertisement to the make-up artist industry.
https://myspace.com/makeupartist/photos
This is a random make-up artist's page but the home page isn't as advertising and doesn't show the contact and development of an artist to the industry. But if you know the networking site then you will look on the photos to see the work of a make-up artist.
These images show that this artist doesn't work on a wide range of make-up shoots, just the use of beauty and fashion advertisement. As a make-up artist you should show even though your speciality may be that type of work but to show you can provide any skills with the wide range of techniques as a make-up artist.
This network doesn't allow such easy access because of the layout or contact as easy as Facebook or Twitter as these network have a wider fan base of the network than Myspace has now. So as a make-up artist I would think this would be a waste of advertisement.
Pinterest
Furthermore another side of advertisement is Pinterest at the moment this has become very popular and recent to the network industry.
This has a different aspect as a site base because its mainly about images where people can like and keep on there own boards with links to where it has been produced from. This is a great help for the make-up industry for help for inspiration and also to gain clients or help each other gain on development of techniques.
As you can see just like the use of hash tag you can search for images of work people have produced this allows you to be inspired or even try and contact a make-up artist mainly how they made the work or how much would they charge to recreate this.
This is mainly to show work and get to the point compared to Facebook and Twitter but getting in contact isn't as easy because of the page layouts if you don't know the sites.
Instagram
Another network which is very similar to this is Instagram which has expanded worldwide and is just as well used as Facebook. These two networks are the mostly used.
The site allow you to have your own account just the same but is in a wide range of section which can be searched if you leave a hash tag e.g. #makeup then your image will appear and can get more clients in this range. However this is an app only used on certain phones instead of computers.
This allows people that mainly use their phones which is most of the population of today's age. That is the only down full compared to the other network pages but this allows contacts to get in contact quicker as they are already on there device.
http://instagram.com/karlapowellmua
These images are taken from a make-up artist I follow on there because as a makeup artist she has expanded just through networking which will help me once I have expanded my self.
These images show her recent images posted and helps to get a more an understanding of a wide range of techniques compared to Facebook and Twitter. Where the make-up artists I have found only like to take the work they specialise in.
As my self the only criticism on this network page as it does let you get to know the make-up artist. I myself would have a instagram only for work purposes and then my own life which could be viewed if wanted by the clients. Also as networking unless in the about me part with your details which is very small, there isn't an easy to contact the artist unless through direct message.
You-Tube
My last social network I'm focusing on is You-tube which is a completely different aspect to the rest. It is very similar to blogging but has a role of the range of aspects you can cover with showing techniques, skills, development and best, loved products to you as a make-up artist.
The excitement towards the You-tube and blogging craze is that depending on the views you can start off a career of which people follow you or subscribe which means you get money for bloging videos.
After posting the video it is very easy to contact the page owner as you can subscribe and comment on the video's to get extra tips or even try and get your self work into the industry just by adding and advertising your you-tube page if it does get very popular.
https://www.youtube.com/user/lisaeldridgedotcom
This what I found when looking for a professional make-up artist which had gained her work and knowledge into the industry via You-tube blogging. It shows it can happen if you have the skills and acknowledgement towards what needs to be achieved.
This network compared to the others has a better use on the home page of a artist compared to just watching the video. This by its own also can help you expand your own management by gaining money of the projects you undertake to produce maybe a portfolio. This can help in the outcome overall.
In comparison as shown from the image it shows that if you do want to expand and show more of a range of a final product from your work you can include you details of other networks if clients or make-up artists need more help in getting in contact with you. Even more if they want to make sure your the make-up artist suitable for the job.
I myself one day if I had time would love to have my own You-tube page as it is a very popular attribute for the industry towards hair and beauty anyway. This always allows you to show your skills as well as the personality and attributes you your self include when exploring your favourite parts of being a make-up artist.
Networking with other make-up artists.
This will give you the chance with working with other make-up artist to expand who you know and people in the industry for future jobs this will be advertising yourself. It will also help to work with other makeup artists to expand your skills as other people have knowledge and you can always learn something new in this industry. Which I have worked with another makeup artist as part of our end of year show project with Chloe Stothard; the image below shows the work at hand.
Art Events
Another way of advertise yourself at art events just like IMATS is to ether show case your work which you would have to be asked by teachers to advertise the course or enter competitions. Also from IMATS you need to be able to talk around to try and see for any work while walking round or on certain stools. Which then you can hand out business cards and CV's. These would include exhibitions, demonstrations and questioning at demonstrations. You would attend all make-up events possible e.g. IMATS and hair and beauty show at excel.
Magazines
From a magazine aspect you can advertise yourself with more competitions and if you had contacts ether know the editor then you can advertise your work. But if you don't have the money for that then you also could use the magazines to help to look for job opportunities which would have to be towards makeup industry.
Brochures
The next aspect I looked at to advertise your self is brochures. It is like a leaflet that shows what you as a makeup artist can provide as a service, about your work and can even have a price list. I took this search opportunity to look at three different types of brochures which would help you take a foot into the industry and has a bit more detail of advertising your self compared to handing out your business card.
http://jasminemendiolablog.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/bridal-makeup-brochure.html
This is one of the brochures, it includes deals and aspects of the makeup a artist wants to work in. The skills techniques and products that will be included and pricing.
This is a good brochure with contact details and images of previous work that show the skills of which they are advertising. The colouring of the brochure is a bit miss match and is too much going on with the crazy colours.
This next brochure shows just the back but this includes the attribute of the details of why to go to this particular makeup artist company and how they have got such well known for their name.
The colours match so that it looks professional and well thought out. The picture shows a aspect that they are known more for permanent make-up. The reason why I choose this one because it has a skill of getting new clients by the aspect of having 30% off with the contain the brochure on consultation. This also shows details of the consultations and makeup that can be done.
Radio
I then looked up the details of where else you can provide advertise somewhere else, which came to the conclusion of looking for details of how much it would come to if I would advertise on the radio.
This helped me come to the website which showed this evidence;
http://www.radioadvertising.co.uk/costs
This shows an average of which if you want to advertise on the radio- "£500 for a local station, £2,500 on a regional station or even upwards from £10,000 on a national station" which would be in more interest for local work to pay £500 if you have that kind of money.
But if your just starting off just as I am it would be a waste as there isn't much of a client base to help show reviews on my work yet or for a small business.
Television advertisement.
After this I thought of TV advertisement, which then helped me to look on reliable research on the internet to see about prices and details of what happens and what your paying. This is proven below;
http://www.tvadvertising.co.uk/?gclid=CjwKEAiA5qOlBRDAn8K5qen65joSJADRvlbqrD0QTn8fFMJHbOOUKWUMyI_Z2w5DsDCp7MG2Hbf6XxoCxkjw_wcB
This is one of the choices found on my research which shows how much and what it would include for the small business advertisements.
From looking at the packages I have found that the comparison of the amount of inches of the the time production is extended and the amount of air time on so many most viewed channel depends on which package you pick also.
Which all are a ridiculous price for a small company of the make-up industry starting off.
Make-up internet forums, message boards and polls.
These categorized together because their all based using the same idea which can really help you advertise a small business some are free and some may have to pay a little fee but could be worth it in the long round helping gain the local client base.
I started off looking for a internet forum that involved only make-up aspects and talk of products and application and places you would go. This would be some where you could gain skills, knowledge of products and clients.
http://www.makeuptalk.com/
This shows that once registering you can start a forum about a topic which people can reply and talk about have messages to have a conversation about. This leads to the same similar aspect of a message board.
I couldn't show no evidence for the message boards but it would look similar to if you would open one of the topics on the advertising forum above but would have a password so only selected people can read it which wouldn't be such a good idea for advertising unless it was a message board every one signed up to and would know the password. As you wouldn't get no expansion of your client base or gain the world view of your work as you can add images to these forums and message boards.
The last similar topic around this type of advertisement would be polls. These could be corrected on forums or pages like so which will show you how your work is viewed by the public which can advertise your work and show the complex depth of what you can provide on jobs. This could also help you get work if the right person see's it. These polls would hold statistics of which work is mostly liked and is mostly wanted by clients by the amount of work specified.
